Fire Officer Company Fire Officer
This course is designed for the first-line Company Fire Officer (CoFO). The Company Fire Officer course satisfies the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association - NFPA 1021 - Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications - Fire Officer I and the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal certification program. The CoFO program combines on-line/distance education with in-classroom practical applications to develop the student’s abilities to lead and manage single-fire company operations.

Company Fire Officer Certification Prerequisites

Prerequisite Requirements (Must be met prior to enrollment in the Company Fire Officer course)
- Engagement as Illinois fire protection personnel, attested by the employing fire chief of the candidate seeking certification.
- Current certification as Advanced Technician Firefighter (Firefighter III).
- Current certification as Fire Service Instructor I.
- Documentation of a minimum of four (4) cumulative years of fire service experience.
- Submission of an Application for Certification to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Additional Requirements to Achieve Full Certification (After meeting prerequisites)
Successful completion of the approved Company Fire Officer course:
- Phase 1 – Minimum 40 instructional hours
- Phase 2 – Minimum 80 instructional hours
Pass the Company Fire Officer State Written Examination within one (1) year of completing Phase 2 (failure to pass within one year requires retaking Phases 1 and 2).
Successful completion of the Company Fire Officer Task Book (Phase 3) within three (3) years of passing the State Written Examination. The Task Book must be verified by a certified Company Fire Officer, documented by a qualified instructor, and signed by the employing fire chief.
Special Provision for Previously Certified Personnel
Candidates who were previously certified as Fire Officer I under the prior system are only required to meet prerequisites 1–5 above, then pass the current Company Fire Officer State Written Examination and complete the current Company Fire Officer Task Book.
