The 2014 Illinois Fire Service Administrative Professional of the Year committee has announced Ms. Joan Buzzard of the City of Effingham Fire Department the recipient of this recognition.

The Illinois Fire Service Administrative Professionals Association is an incredibly talented and respected organization.  Without a doubt, on a day to day basis as well as visionaries for the Illinois Fire Service, this Association plays a critical role in helping make the Illinois Fire Service attain the success that it does.  Those words are not said nor felt lightly. With these comments as a back drop, I would like to speak about this year’s selection for the Administrative Professional of the Year.

Ms. Joan Buzzard of the City of Effingham Fire Department has devoted over 18 years of service to the Illinois Fire Service and her Fire Department. And I think it is safe to say, anybody who knows Joan speaks of her in the absolute most respected words in both a professional and personal manner.

As the key executive support in the fire chief’s administration, Joan is responsible for the hundreds of items that come to the office on a daily basis.  A small sample of these items include the budget, annual report, accounts payables, invoices, personnel and medical records, statistical reports, office manager day to day tasks, IT management and purchases, department historian, assistant to the EMA Coordinator, and the list continues……

A quote from a neighboring chief stated, “Along with the qualities above, Joan has brought an overwhelming sense of togetherness and teamwork to our MABAS Division departments”.  As fire officers, the only other persons we would recommend for this award would be Joan’s family.  We as collective departments cannot begin to thank her family for their patience and understanding.  Joan spends countless hours on her own time working with us and her own department on anything including fundraisers and events out in the community.  Many of the local departments go to Joan for her extensive knowledge of the fire service with issues that plague small departments”.

On behalf of the entire Illinois Fire Chiefs Administrative Professional of the Year Committee and the IFCA Executive Board, to name Joan Buzzard the 2014 IFSAP Administrative Professional of the year.  Our heart- felt congratulations.
