Illinois Fire Chiefs Significant Others Support (SOS) Program Returns to 2013 Conference

The Illinois Fire Chief’s Association is pleased to announce the return of the “Significant Others Support” program to the 2013 combined conference.  Last year was the first time this program was offered and it received earned rave reviews from participants who encouraged the continuation of the program to reach more families of fire officers.

In March of 2004, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation embarked upon a program to prevent line-of-duty deaths and injuries for firefighters.  During a Firefighter Life Safety Summit, the 16 Firefighter Life Safety Initiatives were created to aid in reaching the goal of injury and death prevention.  These initiatives do NOT just address “fire scene” safety measures; rather they take a 360 degree approach to protecting our firefighters AND THEIR FAMILIES.  The IL Fire Chiefs Significant Others Support ® (SOS) program was developed to engage our families and the firefighters in preventing the “MAYDAY” at the fire scene AND AT HOME!

During the IL Fire Chiefs Association / IL Fire Service Instructors / and the IL Fire Apparatus Mechanics Combined Conference October 13-16, 2013 we will be hosting the second “SOS” program for the significant others of fire officers to:

  • Obtain information
  • Share resources
  • Engage in networking opportunities
  • Learn how our responders and their families can support each other with the challenges that are associated with being a firefighter.

This program is comprised of professional development, personal development, and recreational activities designed to encourage an exchange of information in a relaxed yet professional manner.  Participants may join us during each of the program offerings or select only a portion of the activities based upon their schedules and preferences.

A few of the comments from last year’s programs highlighted the importance of returning this year including”

  • “I realize that I AM a single parent 1/3 of the time while my husband is at work – I enjoyed hearing ideas from some of the other participants in how they cope with some of the challenges shift work can cause”.
  • “I had suddenly lost some of my relationship with other spouses and thought it was just me – it was comforting to share with other participants and learn that my relationships were likely collateral damage during contract negotiations.  I appreciated hearing how others dealt with changes in social relationships as their spouses promoted within the organization”.
  • “I wish we would have had this program years ago…it was wonderful to hear how many of our experiences are similar and to learn new ideas for solving old problems”
  • “I am going to encourage my husband to invite all of his officers partners to attend next year”
We sincerely hope that you will consider joining us at this year’s conference to learn more about the program and the resources that are being offered.  For questions, information, or sponsorship opportunities please contact Chief Joe Cluchey at Jcluchey@southelginfire.com
