POSITION AVAILABLE
The City of Sycamore is accepting applications for the position of Fire Chief. This is an exempt, full-time senior level management position that reports to the City Manager and is governed by the City Code and Salary ordinance. The person hired for this position is expected to work a forty-hour workweek, with frequent comp time and frequent response after regular work hours and on weekends and holiday, and must meet residency requirements. The starting salary is dependent on qualifications, with the current range at $90,000 - $110,000.
DUTIES INCLUDE (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):
- Develop and review organizational goals, objectives, and current programs
- Develop and enforce departmental policies and procedures
- Management of the Fire Department’s Administrative and Operations Divisions
- Oversee shift and personnel assignments and the performance of Fire Department employees
- Serve as administrative advisor during IAFF negotiations
- Develop and manage the annual department budget within guidelines established by the City Manager
- Develop the Fire Department’s annual report to the City Council
- Prepare and oversee Firefighter training
- Act as Incident Commander in complex or multi-company incidents
- Work with the Fire and Police commission regarding Firefighter entrance and promotional exams and employee disciplinary actions
- Serve as a Board member of the Sycamore Firefighters Pension Fund
- Serve as a member on the Board of Community organizations
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
- Advanced knowledge of fire suppression equipment and apparatus
- Advanced knowledge of fire prevention principles and procedures
- Advanced knowledge of emergency services training, procedures, and equipment
- Advanced knowledge of personnel management and budget administration
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions and effectively present ideas orally and in writing
- Ability to work effectively under extreme stress
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Administration, Public Administration or related field preferred.
- Minimum of fifteen years experience in the fire services with a history of advancement required, and a supervisory position of ten years preferred.
- Current Illinois Driver’s License and Illinois certification as an EMT, Basic or advanced
- Must be medically certified by City physician to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus
